Lit Genius Annonations

“because there were those who feared alarming fists of snow
on the door and those who feared the riot-squad of statistics”

According to Wikipedia, Columbia records, who signed Bessie Smith, had never done a “race record” before 1923 therefore “the alarming fists of snow and the riot squad of statistics” relate to the controversy that Smith overcame because of race.

“Bare as the brow of Osiris”

Osiris is the Egyptian God of the afterlife and is often seen as having green skin.

“hyperaesthesia”

According to Wikipedia, this condition is when normally harmless stimuli becomes painful. An example would be hearing a sound or feeling a texture that causes pain. This could so reference the aggressive light.

Knowledge Communities to Solve Problems

Some ideas that have come to mind, when discussing Collective Intelligence Communities, are the massive forums that were created to discuss the final book of the Harry Potter series, and the over-arching forums on Playstation Network Forums.

I remember that as a kid my family would sit down together in the evening after dinner and my mom would read the Harry Potter books aloud to all of us. After we finished the sixth book, of course, we were extremely eager to read the next book and find out what happens next. I also remember my mom talking to us about all of the talk and theories of what was going to happen in the last book on the internet. Some of the theories, she said, were backed with logical evidence and of course most were opinionated. In a way, this community was trying to find out what happens before the book was released.

On a different note, similar to the BMW forum, there is a forum on Playstation's website that the general public can go to ask questions or make comments about the system itself or the games that Sony has produced or published. For example, while playing a newer game, I had a major malfunction occur when playing so I went to PSN's forum to express my displeasure and request ideas to fix the problem. I had made a post and had several responses so in way, this was also a community based source of information.

Sad Stats

This is a screen clipping of the stats that blogger has provided about my blog. There are kind of sad, in my opinion, because it would seem as though most of my views are mine and during a specific time period (Class).

If I were in need of page views, for some reason, I think the best starting point would be to share the address to social media. This is the most basic start to modern marketing. Tagging is another good basic start to connect with other users.

One idea that I have to increase popularity or views would be to post about controversial or hot button topics. Be aggressive about what side of the topic you support and post OFTEN.

A Book is a Teleport

When I read, as discussed in class, I choose to read in as much solitude as possible because while reading a book I create a metaphorical environment for myself. I am within the realm of the book.

Similarly, I would say that sitting down and committing to social media takes the user away from REALITY. This is kind of the message that we as users emit while reading or engaging in media, and the sometimes the message is DO NOT DISTURB! I'M BUSY!

Also like we talked about, anyone with a phone can make a substantial impact on someone's life through multimedia. Whether they post it to Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, or all of them, the repercussions can be enormous.

The Medium is the Message!

The creation of the idea of media tools like Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, and so forth has taken societies by storm. The main idea? Connect. "Establish a presence, then connect with others." These media tools are not about how to connect, but that to connect, is possible and necessary. This is, in my opinion, the message of media.

While discussing what the message of television was/is, I think of the television as a controlling entity. Cable said that, if you want to watch a broadcast, then you have to participate when cable said the broadcast was available. Example: CSI airs Thursday at 8 pm, therefore viewers can only watch the show at 8 pm on Thursday. No connection, only control. Also, viewing a cable program is a singular happening whereas now-a-days media like Youtube allow you to connect by posting a comment, like, or share.

Youtube allows the user to choose what they view.

The Black Hills Veterans March and Marathon

I will be looking at the South Dakota National Guard Enlisted Association's website along with the website they use to support their biggest event, the Veterans March.

The SDNGEA website is much better than their event page.
